SANDHILL CRANES

The  resident Sandhill cranes at the George C Reifel Sanctuary. are nesting now and have 2 eggs.  These tall wading birds are very protective of their nests and young, which they keep for  about 10 months. The young chicks are called colts and are able to fly when they are around 2 months old. When they  are 3-5 years old they are mature enough to mate.
